What You Will Do

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

As the Deputy Group Leader (DGL) of the Modern manufacturing Methodologies (E-2) Group, the selected candidate will team with the E-2 Group Leader, the E-2 first line managers, E-2 staff, and the E Division leadership team to provide engineering leadership and technical management for the group. The DGL will report to the Group Leader and serve on the E Division management team. The DGL will assist and supplement the Group Leader in ensuring effective program execution, sound fiscal stewardship, adherence to safety and security policies, program development, personnel development, and other business administrative issues. As this is a 0.5 FTE position, the applicant will be expected to conduct funded (the remaining 0.5 FTE) activities which are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.

E-2 is responsible for providing engineering research and development of cutting edge manufacturing processes and support for various customers spanning a diverse portfolio of projects across the Laboratory, with special emphasis on component design for manufacturing, additive manufacturing, embedded sensing, in-process inspection techniques, mobile robotics, programmatic risk analysis, and systemic decision support. E-2 includes personnel with capabilities and backgrounds in a variety of areas including industrial engineering, systems engineering, nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, civil and environmental engineering, design, and programmatic risk analysis. The group is comprised of engineering, science, and management professionals.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Demonstrated success in leadership and/or management of a program, line organization or large engineering project.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the group's mission areas (design for manufacturing, additive manufacturing, embedded sensing, in process inspection, autonomous robotics, decision/risk analysis).

• Experience in recruiting, evaluating, mentoring and retaining talented undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs and staff (including promoting diversity and fostering teamwork).

• Effective interpersonal and communication skills, which include the ability to engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff, the ability to discuss program strategies with current and potential funding agencies, an ability to delegate tasks to staff and administrators, and an ability to interact with all levels of Laboratory management.

• Demonstrated experience in building collaborative partnerships across LANL internal organizations and demonstrated success in developing and sustaining engineering programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Programs, Global Security Programs, NNSA, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.

• Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and promoting objectives in such areas as performance improvement and budget management.

• The ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Advanced knowledge of one or more of the group's mission areas (design for manufacturing, additive manufacturing, embedded sensing, in process inspection, autonomous robotics, decision/risk analysis), as demonstrated by technical development and implementation.

• Familiarity with the processes and organizations supporting key LANL missions.

• Ability to assimilate and manage the essential elements of various engineering skill sets (owing to the diverse backgrounds and capabilities embodied in E-2 personnel).

• Successful solicitation of diverse funding streams, including experience in developing proposals and/or work packages.

• Active DOE Q Clearance.

• Master's Degree or higher in engineering or related technical field preferred.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
