Your role

CBC Nova Scotia is looking for a reporter/editor who demonstrates and maintains exceptional skill in reporting, writing, editing and packaging audio, video and print for digital and linear platforms.

Reporting to the Executive Producer, Ken MacIntosh, the successful candidate will be a motivated reporter with strong storytelling and presentation skills and good contacts in Nova Scotia. Editorial leadership provides guidance, but initiative and independent judgment are expected.

Close co-operation with assignment, TV, radio and other newsgathering teams and a sound understanding of curation of stills, video, audio and text is required.

You are a critical thinker who is solutions-oriented in a fast-paced environment.

Work is governed by and adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices.

Your work will support Local Services strategy with a focus on three priorities:

Content:

In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout Nova Scotia. You’re innovative and will champion new story treatments and new workflows, and will help create a diverse range of content on our TV, digital and social platforms. You’re not afraid to take creative risks, and you inspire others to do the same.

Community:

As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population in Nova Scotia and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

Culture:

You live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You have a solid understanding of the diverse culture of Nova Scotia.

This role requires full time on site presence.

Key tasks:

  • Pitch, research, write and produce original story ideas for online, current affairs, digital, radio news, social and video platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.

  • Regularly present stories on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.

  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.

  • Deliver exclusive and enterprise material.

  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.

  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts, including those from underserved communities.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Ability to generate, pitch and deliver strong, creative story ideas.

  • Storyteller with a strong news judgment and an awareness of the changing news needs of the audience.

  • demonstrated connection to the province’s diverse communities.

  • Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Working knowledge of digital news including evolving video platforms and social media.

  • Flexibility with hours of work and willingness to learn and take on new tasks across all CBC platforms.

  • Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.

  • Experience in determining potential legal and journalistic issues and ability to act on them.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong team player.

  • Ability to generate original, enterprise journalism.

  • High energy and enthusiasm towards journalism.

  • University degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years relevant experience preferred.

  • Lived experience

  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

  • Willing to work flexible, irregular hours, depending on the assignment.
