DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is open to Colorado residents and non-residents applicants.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Unit The Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV Shop Supervisor position works in the equipment shop in The Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 5 in Durango, CO. This work unit performs skilled journey level work which requires the application of knowledge and skills to diagnose, repair and modify automotive vehicles, maintenance equipment, and specialized heavy construction equipment; preserve and assure that the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition aligned with the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

About the Position As the Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV, you will supervise and assist 7 shop mechanics. You will establish work schedules and priorities on equipment and monitor completeness of work. You will ensure that safety and industry workmanship standards are followed in the shop. You will be responsible for providing technical assistance to mechanics, maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment, and preparing reports of shop activities. You will be a working supervisor. Approximately 60% of your time will be spent working and 40% of your time will be supervising the team,

Major Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Determine the type of training, coaching, and safety required for shop mechanics; perform in-house training or arrange for outside training; provide consistent and timely training on rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ensure safety is upheld daily and conduct a monthly safety meeting. Supervise and inspect quality, quantity, and timeliness of work in progress and at completion; assure equipment is operationally ready before returning it to the field. Assist shop supervisor with the outsourcing of parts and labor required to maintain levels of service; assist in obtaining contracts with local vendors, developing scopes of work for functions performed, and working with the procurement office to find a vendor that meets requirements under procurement rules and regulations. Procure parts, tools, equipment, and supplies. Plan, schedule, and prioritize work to be performed and communicate with employees; modify the schedule as necessary to maintain the maximum amount of equipment working within the fleet. Road test all equipment before releasing it to the customer. Assist shop supervisor with developing an equipment replacement plan; monitor equipment use/age and establish spreadsheets and plans for the replacement of equipment; track equipment being replaced and account for each. Monitor customer needs and equipment performance. Audit records of all equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, and equipment inspections, including parts, costs, tool costs, inventories, and employee time records. Work within the parameters of State Fleet Management (SFM) to provide service to vehicles with their organization; review service reports and prepare monthly odometer reports to SFM; review accuracy and completeness of fuel usage inventory data, check for unusual fuel usage patterns, and investigate unexplained inventory losses. Manage fleet for Region vehicles and equipment; collect, analyze, and communicate data related to equipment usage, repair histories, and cost of operation; manage the registration of vehicles and equipment, including emissions. Manage employee mechanic's license requirements and training.
