Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Alberta Environmental Services group is currently seeking an Intermediate Environmental Planner to work within our Assessment, Permitting and Compliance Team. The team is largely based in Calgary, and while we embrace our core value that “we are better together”, we do offer flexible work solutions and hybrid work situations.

Our regulatory knowledge, environmental assessment experience and scientific expertise allow us to help our clients develop the most effective and innovative approach to meeting their regulatory and permitting needs.

In this position you will be exposed to an exciting array of projects in various stages of their lifecycle including permitting, approval requirements, and construction and post-construction support. Typical projects include small to large-scale provincial and federal pipelines, oil and gas facilities, and power-related projects (including renewables). We are always growing as we continue to adapt to the changing environment in which we work and are excited to work on a number of energy transition projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical, environmental and regulatory support for small to large-scale energy projects through the assessment, application filing, post-filing (including written and oral hearings) and post-approval stages

  • Lead teams of technical environmental and engineering specialists to support the environmental assessment, application development and permitting processes

  • Work directly with clients to provide strategic environmental advice and project management throughout all stages of a project’s lifecycle including approval, construction, post-construction and operational management within both provincial (AB and BC) and federal regulatory frameworks

  • Create and provide review of environmental assessments and technical documents that support regulatory permitting

  • Author environmental assessments and technical documents that support regulatory submissions and construction support

  • Prepare budgets, manage scope changes, establish schedules and ensure that project work is carried out within agreed time-frames and on budget

  • Responsible for all financial aspects of project execution including internal and external financial reporting

  • Contribute to business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with existing and prospective clients

  • Support and ensure implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work and coordinate with HSSE professionals during the execution of all phases of project planning and implementation

  • Communicate and collaborate with other environmental and regulatory specialists to ensure consistency in project execution

  • Work collaboratively with the team to provide innovative solutions and help meet our energy transition and EGS goals

  • Develop and mentor junior staff

  • Participate in team and independent based work

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to work with initiative, professionalism and confidentiality, multi-task and adapt to change in a very dynamic environment

  • Strong understanding of provincial (AB, BC) and federal regulations, permitting requirements and environmental assessment processes

  • Demonstrated effective writing and communication skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Effective writing and communication skills

  • Proven problem-solving skills and out-of-the-box thinking

  • Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds including internal and external clients and regulatory agencies

Your Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences or in Environmental Studies.

  • A minimum of 5 years of environmental and regulatory related experience in the energy sector (oil and gas, pipelines, mining, electrical transmission, power generation).

  • Direct experience in federally regulated pipelines and facilities and/or provincially regulated pipelines, mines and facilities (AB and BC) preferred.

  • Direct knowledge of Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act applications preferred.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with construction practices is an asset.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
