Summary Statement

We are looking for energetic Lifeguards for our summer aquatics program! Join us at one of four outdoor pools throughout the city.

  • Monitors activities in and around public pools to provide assistance and protection to patrons

  • Open to all interested persons 15 years of age and older

  • Works days, evenings, weekends, and holidays during the summer

  • This position is designated as At-Will

  • Borah Pool

  • Fairmont Pool

  • Ivywild Pool

  • Natatorium Pool and Hydrotube

Essential Functions

Maintains patron safety. Monitors patron behavior in and around the pool. Enforces pool rules. Assists patrons in need of rescue and performs necessary lifesaving activities. Provides first aid, CPR and calls emergency medical personnel if necessary. Performs customer service by interacting with patrons and communicating information regarding pool programs and pool safety. Performs custodial work as necessary including maintaining a safe pool and deck area.

Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Requirements

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications, including CPR, AED and First Aid. American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard accepted.

Working knowledge of basic first aid and lifesaving techniques; customer service techniques.

Ability to perform light custodial duties; enforce pool rules and regulations; make appropriate decisions in emergency situations; interact with the public and co-workers in a friendly and professional manner; display display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Training

Two or more years' experience as a certified lifeguard.

Special Requirements

All applicants must be able to successfully pass City of Boise background check processes which include reference checks and criminal history checks.

Drug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

This position is required to perform emergency medical, lifesaving, and/or fire suppression activities.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 lbs. Also the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs. The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions, in wet, humid conditions. Employees work in/at heights. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals.

This position works: some evening and weekend shifts.

19-Hour Temporary

All temporary part-time employees working less than an average of 19-hours per week are not currently eligible for benefits.

4-Month Temporary

All 4-month temporary employees working an average of 40-hours per week will accrue personal leave which can be used during employment.

8-Month Seasonal

In addition to accruing personal leave, anyone in an 8-month seasonal position working over an average of 30-hours per week is eligible for medical coverage.

9-Month Temporary

In addition to personal leave accrual and medical coverage, a position that is classified as a 9-month temporary is eligible for PERSI retirement benefits.
