Course Description
Job Summary: The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office in the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance is seeking one (1) 50% (0.50 FTE; 20 hours/week) Graduate Student Staff Assistant (GSSA) to work with the Director to assist with the implementation of the School?s DEI initiatives. The School of Music, Theatre & Dance DEI Graduate Student Staff Assistant position (GSSA) will support efforts researching, planning, and helping to execute a large symposium centered around DEI at SMTD. Thus, this position will help by building relationships across SMTD broadly and with history project leads, and constructing a basic framework for the logistical components of the symposium. In the second half of the academic year the GSSA will focus on coordinating a steering committee for the symposium and history projects, respectively, and executing a project management process in Asana to help coordinate the many aspects of the proposed projects. In this role, the GSSA will conduct research to ensure best practices that prioritize content that is suitable for a performing arts focused symposium. This position is a hybrid part time, 20-hours a week, with some in person meetings and in office work.
Responsibilities*
Facilitate working relationships with researcher(s) throughout campus, who can help inform and answer questions regarding the history of student inclusivity at SMTD and their experiences within SMTD?s various programs
Collaborate with SMTD faculty, staff, and the folks working on the Inclusive History Project (IHP) to further engagement and reparative efforts at the university
Regularly communicate with current SMTD community members on a range of topics that center DEI, the SMTD history project, and symposium
Assist in creating a project management plan for the symposium
Assist in creating a steering committee for the symposium
Assist in coordinating meetings for the steering committee
Manage materials associated with both the SMTD history project and symposium
Required Qualifications*
Applicants must be currently registered in a graduate program at U-M. Preference will be given to doctoral students who have reached candidacy
The work described above for this position must be considered academically relevant by the department or degree program in which the student is enrolled
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work and communicate effectively and professionally with the University community as well as potential external constituents.
Ability to work collaboratively or independently, as the task requires
Demonstrated competency with modern computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation programs, and project management software
Bachelor's degree
Strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Desired Qualifications*
Prior experience with event planning
Experience with issues in graduate education, student development, leadership development, and diversity issues in higher education
Interest in the performing arts
Previous work experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education
An understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented populations in higher education
Project management experience
Previous experience developing resource materials
Basic data analysis and familiarity with Qualtrics
Note: some flexibility of scheduled work hours is required, including evenings or weekends on a prior scheduled basis
