Indian Health Service Dentist in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Summary This position is located at the Albuquerque Indian Health Service Dental Clinic located on the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute campus, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of the position is to provide advanced dentistry services in accordance with the Indian Health Service policies and provide clinical and occasional training activities. Responsibilities Diagnoses – provides oral and radiographic examination of the oral cavity and provides diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions. Treatments/restoration – determines type of restoration required and perform restorative procedures; performs corrective treatment as required, involving both children and adults. Educates/other duties – plans and executes community dental health programs for oral disease prevention and patient education. Administrative functions – develops and maintains good public relations with other health disciplines and tribal health groups, health education and governing organizations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize an available flexibility wherein applicants who are currently enrolled and expected to complete the required education and/or obtain the required licensure/certification/registration within 9 month(s) of applying, may be deemed tentatively qualified. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DENTAL OFFICER SERIES, 0680 Education: You must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: You must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Additional Requirements for the grade GS-12: Experience: In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, you must have at least two full years of professional dentistry experience and/or training. This experience is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service (obtained in public or private sector) as described in the vacancy announcement. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area; the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position. OR Residency: You must have completed a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent in scope and responsibility to the next lower grade level, and/or training. Medical Requirements for the grade GS-12: You must be able to distinguish shades of color.Copies (official or unofficial) transcripts must be included in your application to support meeting the Basic and Licensure requirements. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). Education This position has Basic and Licensure requirements. Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. The Indian Health Service (IHS), National Health Service Corps (NHSC), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have student loan repayment programs for qualifying health disciplines.
